MG ZS EV Expert Review The MG ZS EV doesn’t just bring an electric powertrain to the table, it enhances the MG driving experience with improved range, features, and refinement. At first glance, the ZS EV retains its connection to the MG Astor, but subtle upgrades like the new LED headlamps, redesigned bumpers, and EV-specific wheels give it a more futuristic appeal. The charging port has been smartly repositioned from the grille to the side fender, making access easier. The black plastic body cladding and silver skid plates add a rugged touch, while the aerodynamic alloy wheels contribute to efficiency. Inside, the ZS EV borrows heavily from the Astor, featuring a premium dashboard layout with soft-touch materials, red stitching, and a carbon fiber-like texture on the seats. The new 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system is a major upgrade from the previous 8-inch unit, offering better responsiveness and connected features. However, ventilated seats are missing, which is a letdown at this price point. Rear-seat comfort has been slightly improved with rear AC vents and a center armrest, but the floor remains high due to the battery pack, affecting under-thigh support. The 60:40 split rear seats and 470L boot space make it practical for daily use. The ZS EV now produces 176 PS (previously 143 PS), but despite the power bump, 0-100 km/h remains at 8.5 seconds due to optimization for range and efficiency. It still offers instant torque, making it effortless to drive in the city. The three drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport) allow drivers to customize performance, with Sport mode offering the quickest acceleration but also reducing range. The regenerative braking system has three levels, but it does not offer single-pedal driving, which some rivals provide. Additionally, regen efficiency could have been better, as it does not significantly add to the real-world range. With a 50.3 kWh battery pack, MG claims a 461 km range, but real-world figures are closer to 300-350 km, depending on driving style and conditions. The ZS EV continues to prioritize comfort over sportiness. The soft suspension makes city rides plush but results in body roll during spirited driving. It remains stable at highway speeds, but steering feedback is light, making it less engaging for enthusiasts. The ZS EV is loaded with tech, featuring a 10.1-inch infotainment system, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and a panoramic sunroof. Safety is comprehensive with six airbags, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist. However, it lacks ADAS features like lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking that some competitors offer. The MG ZS EV is a well-rounded electric SUV that offers good range, premium features, and a comfortable ride. It excels in urban usability but requires charging infrastructure planning for highway drives. The price premium over ICE SUVs is justified by its EV-specific refinements and technology, making it a solid choice for those transitioning to electric mobility.
